Internationally Renowned Rhinoplasty Surgery
Expert Nose Surgeon

Background
Dr Pieter F Swanepoel, the Nose Clinic's specialist surgeon, is probably the only surgeon in the world who performs nose surgery exclusively. He has pioneered and invented several world-first techniques for nose surgery and nasal anaesthetics that are fast becoming the gold standard which thousands of patients world-wide are benefiting from.

Dr Swanepoel has focused exclusively on nasal surgery for more than 30 years. During this time he has performed more than 20 000 procedures. Now put this in the context of any area of expertise -- golf, for example -- and ask yourself who gets your vote of confidence: the golfer who strolls around the greens once a fortnight, or the professional who's on the course every day, rain or shine, his eye firmly fixed on success? We're betting your choice would be the seasoned and dedicated pro.

When it comes to nose surgery, Dr Swanepoel is that expert and experienced professional -- and his expertise and dedicated professionalism are crucial factors in a decision that will have permanent effects on your wellbeing, health and appearance.

Dr Swanepoel hails from a family with a century-long legacy of medical doctors. He studied at South Africa's prestigious Stellenbosch University, and resolved immediately to concentrate solely on nasal surgery. He furthered his studies in London and then at specialist centres in the USA. With 30 years of dedicated experience in his field, Dr Swanepoel is one of the world's few rhinoplasty specialists with the all-round formal training, experience and expertise required for all forms of nasal surgery -- cosmetic, functional, reconstructive and revised.

Medical experts regard rhinoplasty as one of the most technically and intellectually demanding forms of surgery. Achieving excellence in this field takes considerable talent, dedicated practice, and superb training. Dr Swanepoel benefited from the experience of working with and learning from some of the world's very best rhinoplasty surgeons at the beginning of his career. Now, in turn, he plans to share these skills with a select group of young South African surgeons. The result will benefit not only these trainees, but also South African surgery in general -- and, in true Nose Clinic style, the biggest winners will be the patients, whose wellbeing and increased self-esteem depend on a totally professional, meticulous and specialised surgeon.

The expert's expert
Dr Swanepoel is the only surgeon in the history of South African cosmetic surgery to have been invited on several occasions by both the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons in the United Kingdom and the American Academy of Facial, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (AAFPRS) to lecture on some of his pioneering work in rhinoplasty. He has published several articles both in local and international medical and surgical journals, and he has operated on closed-circuit TV in front of specialist surgeon audiences

  • Lectures here and abroad. Dr Swanepoel has delivered lectures in South Africa and internationally, including presentations to the Royal College of Surgeons and the prestigious American Academy of Facial, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. In July 2006, the American Academy invited Dr Swanepoel to address international delegates at the Academy's 9th International Symposium in Las Vegas on the prevention of post-operative twisting when correcting saddle depressions of the nose.
  • Papers. Dr Swanepoel has published several papers on functional rhinoplasty and current cosmetic rhinoplasty concepts.
  • Training other specialists. He has presented lectures and performed rhinoplasty operations on closed-circuit television for specialist surgeons in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Stellenbosch, at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town and the Addington Training Hospital in Durban.
  • Honing skills. Regular participation in conferences, workshops and seminars organised by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons ensures that Dr Swanepoel remains abreast of modern technological and surgical developments.

Academic contributions

  • Textbooks. Dr Swanepoel is currently working on three textbooks on rhinoplasty -- primary rhinoplasty, revisional/reconstructive rhinoplasty, and African rhinoplasty (following the successful application of surgical techniques for correcting saddle depressions in African and Asian noses).
  • Thesis. Dr Swanepoel has also completed a thesis on the human face, with special emphasis on the nose.

Pioneering research

  • Local anaesthetic. In 1995, Dr Swanepoel and his anaesthetist Dr Reinach began their pioneering work on an immensely successful and internationally recognised computer-aided local anaesthetic application for nasal surgery -- the result of extensive research.
  • Grafting materials. Thanks to his profound fascination with his area of expertise, Dr Swanepoel is engaged in ongoing research on the use of grafting materials -- lyophilised rib cartilage, pericardium, demineralised iliac bone, and Alloderm -- in reconstructive and/or revision surgery.
